Consultative decision making is characterized as:
- Moderately fast
- Somewhat collaborative
- Hierarchical
- Relatively private
It's best used when expertise from a limited group is needed or when support from key members is crucial.
- Assessing the situation and evaluating obvious choices
- Selecting 2-3 people with valuable information or perspectives
- Asking for their opinions (allowing time for consideration if needed)
- Making the final decision
- If that doesn’t work move onto one of the other methods of decision making listed below
- Communicating the decision to the group
